The material in CLEP examinations is general education material, typically taken within the first
two years of college. Credits granted by CLEP exams are usually the same as the corresponding
course at an on ground campus. For instance if an Introductory Psychology class would grant 3
units on campus the Introductory Psychology CLEP would grant the same.
All CLEP exams are administered by computer. Each exam is 90 minutes long with the exception
of English Composition with Essay. The essay section of English Composition must be completed
in 45 minutes with 45 minutes allowed for the 50 multiple choice questions. Most CLEP exams are
made up of multiple choice questions.
CLEP exams are entirely computer based and you will receive your score almost immediately
after completing your test. English Composition with Essay is the exception with results within
about a month. Official results are mailed within a month of completing any exam.
CLEP exams are just $72 to take, plus any service fees to the testing center. Service fees are
generally below $20. Military service
members can take the CLEP exams for free.
Currently there are 34 college courses which are offered through CLEP testing. The exams
offered are the equivalent to the courses students take in their first two years of college. You
can use these exams to accelerate your degree completion and test out of many prerequisite and
beginner-level courses.
